Psychology
in School
June
2011
I
was recently asked to deliver some sessions within Sweyne Park
School in Rayleigh, to form part of their innovative and
exciting 'Big Brain Week'. This event, the brainchild (pun
intended!) of Helen Banks from the schools art department, was
designed to encourage both thinking skills within the pupils and
develop a deeper understanding of aspects of psychology.
Thus
it was that on Tuesday 28th June, I worked with three groups of
psychology students in the Library. Unfortunately, it was an
incredibly hot day, but the students really enjoyed it and engaged
with a range of ideas drawn from my subconscious and NLP talks
- from hidden messages to aspects of internal imagery and its
effects on performance and motivation. Great fun!

The
Waterstones Artwork
July

I
always enjoy getting psychology out there and engaging the public
with it, so I was delighted to be asked to contribute to a wonderful
arts project, currently on display in the town as part of the
Artside project.
The
piece is a bathtub, covered in psychology texts, and with a shower
that when you pick it up and listen you can hear a short psychology
talk - which is where I came in!
The
piece, called 'Eureka' after Archimedes famous epiphany in the bath,
explores the relationship of psychology and art, as well as gives
the visitor and opportunity to take away a nugget of psychological
information.
Created
by artist and head of psychology at Southend High School for Girls,
Debora D'Auria, and her pupils, the piece is on display for a little
while, before going to the Southend High School for Girls summer
fete on 17th September, so why not pop into Waterstones, and sit in
the bath yourself!
